7 Signs Your Ductwork Needs Replacing in a New Orleans Home

Ductwork is the most forgotten part of an HVAC system — hidden in your attic, out of sight, and quietly costing you comfort and money when it fails. In Louisiana's brutal attic heat and humidity, ducts don't last forever. Here are the seven signs it's time to replace, not patch.

    1. Rooms That Never Match the Thermostat

If your back bedroom is 8°F warmer than the living room no matter what the thermostat says, undersized, disconnected, or collapsed ducts are almost always the reason.

    2. Weak Airflow at the Registers

Hold your hand in front of a vent. If you feel a whisper instead of steady airflow, either the ducts are crushed, disconnected, or leaking badly into the attic.

    3. Musty or Moldy Odors When the AC Runs

Louisiana humidity plus warm attic air plus condensation inside old flex duct equals mold. Once mold has taken hold inside the duct insulation, replacement is safer and more permanent than cleaning.

    4. Sky-High Energy Bills

Leaky ductwork can waste 20–30% of everything your AC produces. If your Entergy bill is climbing faster than your neighbors', and your equipment is in decent shape, your ducts are the prime suspect.

    5. Dust That Won't Quit

If you're dusting every three days, your return-side ducts are pulling attic and wall-cavity air (and everything in it) into your living space.

    6. Visible Damage on Inspection

Crushed sections, torn outer jackets, black staining, disconnected boots at the ceiling, or duct tape (real duct tape fails fast in an attic) all point toward replacement rather than a patch.

    7. Ducts Older Than 15–20 Years

Even if they look OK from a quick glance, older flex duct loses its insulation R-value and inner liner integrity. Combined with any of the signs above, age tips the scale toward replacement.

    Clean, Seal, or Replace?

We don't recommend duct replacement lightly — it's a real investment. A camera inspection tells us which sections can be cleaned and sealed and which need to go. That way you spend the money where it actually matters.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Most flexible ductwork lasts 15–20 years in Louisiana, though attic heat and humidity can shorten that. Metal ducts can last 25+ years if sealed properly, but the insulation and mastic seals often fail earlier.

Often, yes. Cleaning and re-sealing are usually the first step. Replacement is warranted when the ducts are collapsed, torn, moldy beyond remediation, seriously undersized, or leaking so badly that sealing won't save them.

Cost depends on the size of the duct system, attic access, how much of the trunk line has to be rebuilt, and whether returns need to be added. Because those factors vary widely between homes, the only reliable figure comes from an on-site evaluation and a written quote.

Yes — often dramatically. Leaky ducts can waste 20–30% of the conditioned air your AC produces. Sealing or replacing that ductwork restores capacity you were already paying for.

Warning signs include a persistent musty smell when the AC runs, visible black staining around vent registers, and allergy or respiratory symptoms that improve when you leave home. A duct camera inspection confirms it.
